Hiring from overseas can be beneficial when companies are unable to attract qualified employees because of a shortfall in the local labour market.

A company in Australia can hire a prospective employee from overseas with approval from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

There are a number of visa options to do this:

Temporary Business Long Stay Visa (subclass 457)
This visa is available for a period up to 4 years and requires a three-part application process:

  1. The company is required to gain approval as a sponsor
  2. The company nominates the employee for a position it needs to fill
  3. The employee applies for the Temporary Business Long Stay visa (subclass 457)

Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417)
If a prospective employee is eligible for, or has a valid Working Holiday Visa, then your company may not need to apply for sponsorship with DIAC. For more information please click here.
